In-Class Writing 2
As soon as I leave my dorm room, I am exposed to rhetoric all around me without even noticing. First, I see all the signs, posters, and boards hanging all over the dorm hall. They are promoting all different things, like study groups, parties, clubs, recreational activities, and such. In the bathroom, there is writing on the mirror informing everyone about a 3K walk they are having for cancer awareness, signs for a movie night, and post-it notes telling people to join certain Facebook groups. On my walk to class, I am approached by a man who hands me a pamphlet saying "Help End Cruelty!" I look at the pamphlet and there are pictures all over of animals in small, dirty cages. There is information throughout it about animal cruelty in factories and how cutting the amount of meat you eat in half can help. There is rhetoric everywhere, you just have to look for it.

The sound of the alarm rings signaling it's time to begin the day. I open my eyes to walls decorated with elegant actors, movie posters, and antiques. The television flickers in the dark room. It switches from the latest news updates to political ads. I notice the Ball State sticker as I get in my car. As I get closer to campus, I see event posters and back to college sale billboards. It's time to walk to class. I hear women chatting about the latest fashion and music playing in the background. I open the doors to the Cooper building. The walls are plastered with health awareness posters, study sessions times, and tips. I join the other people lined up against the wall and wait for class to begin.

As I wake up I am greeted by my Brides Maids poster, one of my all time favorite movies then i walk over to my closet and slip on my favorite sports team t-shirt. I continue my walk down the hall feeling very overwhelmed by all the news letters and activities posted along then walls, reminding me that i signed up for this or need to attend that. Just as i step outside I am greeted by a whole new set of advertisements be throw at me, for instance a White Sox base ball cap, a Sponge Bob t-shirt or a pepsi can. Everywhere I go I am comforted with millions of advertisements. The one I look closest at though are the ones prominently displayed on people skin, tattoos. People everywhere are giving into the newest phase that is tattoos, I personally love tattoos and I myself have one. This form of advertisement strikes most fascinating because they are permanent. Walking the streets to my next class i keep my eyes open for any interesting tattoo that might catch my eye. Once in class I take my seat and stare around the room trying to desperately drown out my history professor. The walls in the class are bare so I draw my attention to a girls Ball State tank top and tell myself i should buy one soon. My eyes continue to wander until I see a beautiful pair of coach shoes in the row in front of me. Class is over and I make my way back to my room repassing all the same signs and spotting new advertisements among the people who pass as well. Then I set my books and Jansport back pack on my been bag chair and lay on my bed and drift off to the distant sound of the newest Katy Perry song in the back ground. Rhetorical things are all around us every day we just need to open our eyes and see them.

On the way to class I see many different types of advertisements for student organizations on campus. Today when walking to class I passed flyers for some fraternities who were advertising rush week and encouraged male students to come check out the festivities. I passed some flyers reminding students of the first football game of the season on Thursday. There were a group of girls in front of the library promoting the sorority life to the girls on campus. As I walked to class I began to realize how much there is to do on campus and how bad everyone wants you to get involved. I am already in a fraternity and am plenty busy so the flyers and spokes people did not apply to me but I could see how they would be very helpful for an individual who is looking for an organization to join.

Exiting my dorm room heading to my 8 AM class, I find many ads and fliers on the walls. On the door of every room there are also brightly colored "Getting to Know You" sheets that everyone filled out on move-in day. They have information such as what everyone's nickname is or what is their favorite hobby. On the walls there are announcements telling about the first football game, upcoming meetings, and clubs that are available to join. There are also signs for the bathroom, laundry room, emergency exits, etc. Walking down the stairs there are even more ads, mainly for the upcoming hall council election, of candidates wanting my vote. Even in the elevator there are more ads and announcements, all brightly colored with large font trying to capture my attention. When I exit the building there are a few people around, all heading to their early morning classes as well. Many of them are wearing clothing with logos, a lot of them are advertising for Ball State University, showing their school pride. I have to walk across the parking lot to get to my first class. Even the cars have visual rhetoric, whether it is their license plate advertising where they come from, the car symbol, or the bumper stickers people might choose to put on their cars. Crossing the street I notice many signs with symbols that instruct drivers and pedestrians the law of the road, or what street they are on. The trucks that pass all have large advertisements on the side, wanting you to buy from their company. And across the street I can already see the sign that tells me the building I am about to enter is the Robert Bell Building. Entering the building, I see even more flyers and ads for various things. There are also various signs informing you of the number of the classroom you are about to enter which is helpful because I am usually not yet fully awake that early in the morning.
Overall I noticed there is rhetoric everywhere, and it greatly influences everyone's daily life.

As soon as I stepped foot outside of my dorm this morning I encountered visual rhetoric. Taped to the front of my door are posters informing me of hall activities that were coming soon. As I made my way to the elevator, flyers were hung upon the walls and cork boards. In the elevator lobby, posters are taped to the window to advertise free zumba classes on the first floor every Tuesday. On my way to my first class, I see various logos printed across hats, t-shirts, and hooded sweatshirts. While walk I past the Bracken Library, I am able to hear a slight buzz of music from several people's headphones. I encounter a man repeating, "help stop aids" as he hands each person a flyer, including myself. Besides the famous clothing logos I see, I pass many people sporting Ball State clothing. I am near my destination when I see several cars drive by with stickers on their bumpers. Walking up the steps to the Teacher's College, I see flyers stuck on the inside of the glass doors. Inside of the building there are many papers pasted onto the walls directing students to their classes. Before I know it, I'm already walking into my classroom.
After today's exercise and assignment, I am more aware of how rhetoric exists all around us in our everyday lives.

When I leave to go to class, I walk out of my dorm room, and while I am walking down the hall I see marker boards with notes on them of invites to parties. Then I walk over to the elevator and see advertisements for up coming events.
After my little elevator ride I walk in to the main lobby. As I walk in to the lobby I see students with t-shirts that have brand logos or TV show references on them. Then on my way to class I see posters in different places that are advertising different up coming events and things to buy.
After my walk I reach the Art and Journalism building. As I walk in I see more posters, but now some new ones, about different clubs and organizations that I can get involved with. Along with those I see some food signs by Jomba Juice advertising that the food is healthy there.
I have become more aware of the everyday rhetoric through this assignment.

As I walk the campus, music blaring in my ears through my headphones, trying to scurry to my first class, I hardly take the time to look around and grasp in everything around me. The posters around campus should keep me interested in what's going on around the town. Instead, I've ignored them and have been completely lost. Rhetoric is supposed to make you think. Posters around the campus with just pictures make me wonder what it's about, when really the answer is right infront of me. I already know the answer, I'm just not looking too deep into it. When I reflect back now, looking at the day I had, I realize just how many posters, media, I have seen. They are everywhere, literally. Information is all around us. Open your eyes and you can find what you're looking for. Well, most of the time. I have pictures in my room that I didn't even realize was a form a rhetoric information.
in class writing 2
This morning as I walked across campus there were many things that I came across. First, my roommate and I walked to Jamba Juice and they had all their ads about how healthy their food is. On the menu it emphasized the calories that were in each product and on the wall and on the food bags there were was a paragraph or so talking about how their company uses all natural fruit. They also had pretty pictures of the smoothies to attract the customer's attention, which in my case, it did. On the way back, we passed the many buildings and their signs. When I made it back to the dorm, I noticed all the campaigning students had done to attract the voter's eye so they could win. Finally, on my way to my first class, when I was a little more awake, I could see all the different logos and pictures on people's clothes. I never realized that so many things that I encounter everyday were right in front of me; the things I see everyday are what motivate people to go do something, and that's what the whole point of what rhetoric is.

This morning when walking into the food court trying to decide what I want for breakfast I encountered a fridge full of beverages and food. All of them coated in labels from all different kinds of companies with bright and colorful logos trying to draw me in and purchase their product. I hustled out because I was running late for class, and on my morning stroll everywhere I looked were endless amounts of posters with adds on them. Many ranging from big time corporates trying to buy their products or Ball State posters telling you to go to events. It was not just posters that had adds on them but every item had some sort of label on them stating who made that item. Either it be mom and pop shops or giant corporates. Students walking and all of them wearing clothing with different graphic designs on them, from shoes, pants, shirts, belts, and etc. There was no escape to adds though, everywhere I looked there was some sort of add. I check mail e-mail and get bombard with endless amounts of spam. All of them had one object though, and it was to draw in customers. As I am about to walk into class I notice the buses with adds slapped on all over them. Most of them giant corporations sponsering the buses.
This has taught me that rhetoric is constantly around us no matter where we are.

The second I leave my room to head to class, I encounter
visual rhetoric. The girls across the hall have a flyer of their door to vote
for the hall council. It has bright colors and is very creative. Then I continue
to walk down the hall and there are even more posters and flyers to look at. There
are informational flyers on the RA’s door about fun things we are going to be
doing and about programs we are going to do as a floor. The bulletin boards are covered with
information too. Leaving the building there are newspapers with color to get my
attention. Everywhere I look there is some type of flyer for something new
going on around or even off campus. Sometimes the flyers are even on the
ground. Without the flyers I would never even know about half the stuff I find
out about. Some of the buses that drive by have ads on them. I have to read
lots of textbooks for my different classes I take and they all teach me
something new. Watching people walk by shows me new things as well. Shirts have
bands on them that I have never heard of and maybe they are of companies that
do good things for the community. If I’ve never heard of it, their shirts make
me more aware. Without visual rhetoric it would be very hard to stay in the
loop of everything, especially on a college campus.

When I walk out of my room and lock my door, I see my name and my roommates hanging there. As I walk down the hallway I see the same thing on everyone else's doors. Once I get to the end of the hall I see the bathroom with posters and flyers all over the door. I then walk to the stairs where I see a mirror, the mirror has notes written on it of important events happening in my hall. As I walk down the stairs, I see more and more flyers. I also see the floor numbers of each floor that I reach. Once I am downstairs in the lobby of my dorm, I again see more posters, some colorful and some with pictures. By this point I see a lot of people. These people wear all sorts of clothing with words on them. I see Nike, American Eagle, Under Armor, and even Ball State University. When I walk outside and down the sidewalk to class, I am overwhelmed with what I see. There are more people with wording on their clothing, cars with brand names on them, signs for buildings, and so much more. I run into people handing out flyers with information on them and even wearing shirts to advertise this. I see people wearing hats that have sports teams on them, I even see shoes with words them. There are funny sayings on peoples clothes, and keychains with interesting pictures. As I am walking past buildings I see the beautiful statues and artwork around campus. I also come across street signs and traffic lights with signs on them. Once I get into a building I see the same things I have been. The people with logos, sports teams, brand names, and sayings on their shirts. I see more posters and flyers advertising for different clubs, sports, and events around campus. Now I see room numbers on doors, and teachers names written on chalkboards. I also see students with text books and so much more.

Rhetoric is all around us. Walking around campus it is clear easy to see it such as the logos on shirts. Signs and advertisements on buildings. Walking through the basement of Lafollette the first thing that you notice is the music. The music that plays in this area often seems random and sometimes is startling. The clusters of tables in the center stand out to me, as well as the tables in the center. Sitting at one of the tables is a couple who is having an argument about something. There conversation seems to blend in with the music. As I enter the hallway where the classrooms are located, everything becomes instantly quieter. I walk into the classroom, take off my back and sit at my table.
During my walk to class I realized how huge a roll that rhetoric plays in my life. It is surprising to think that you are constantly surrounded by it.

While walking from my dorm to class, I observed student under trees studying. They seemed to be actively engaged in their books, comfortable in their environment and enjoying themselves in the shade. I continued down the street and saw the campus announcement board. It showed the dates and times for events around campus. Many students' attire had information and symbols and organizations that they belong to. My walk was very short, and I did not get to see much of anything else.

I opened the door to the hallway from my room eager to go study at the student center. I looked across the hall and read a message on the dry erase board on the other room's door. I then walked down the hallway looking a the bulletin board noticing all the flyers and inspirational signs posted on it. After walking through the hall way i left out of my hall and noticed the architecture building looming in front of me. i walked around it and noticed a flyer station littered with advertisements, announcements, and flyers. After walking past this i read the street sign that said I was on the right street. As i walked down the street i noticed people's shirts with logos promotions and writing on them. There were cars that sped down the road past me with their company logo or phone number on it. Eventually i came to a four way stop waiting for the little red hand to turn off and the green walking man to turn on so i could walk safely across the street. When the little green man did turn on I stayed inside the white lines that are designated for me to walk between. I turned to my right and noticed the teachers college and its enormous amount of floors. After proceeding through another four way stop I could see the student center closing in. However, i was distracted by the poster sale right next to it advertising posters of all sorts for low prices. Finding the strength to pass it up i then proceeded into the student center sat down in a chair and began my studies.

Most of the visual rhetoric I come across while I walk across campus is very colorful in order to draw attention to it and stand out against all the others. Usually its aimed at a specific audience, in most cases it is the students on campus. There is also rhetoric on clothing as well. Things such as company logos, funny quotes or phrases, or even a shirt gotten from an event that someone attended in the past. Since I live in Noyer, I pass by the bulletin board with numerous ads and flyers on it for various things. Some times i stop and read a few of them. They are usually flyers for clubs or events that not many people may know about. Rhetoric is something I noticed a lot but never really thought about that much. Every thing around us seems to advertise something or try to call attention to a cause. I have learned to look around and really think about what they are trying to bring attention to.

This morning, I had to walk to the Cooper Science Building to take a test on InQsit. On my way back, I noticed an announcement board on the other side of the sidewalk that was littered with posters and signs. One that I specifically remember seeing was for the concerts that were going on last week in the Village. As I continued my walk, I walked past a lot of students that had 8 A.M. classes. Many were wearing Ball State attire. Hats, shirts, and jackets were what I saw the most of. I walked past a light pole and noticed a small design that was spray painted on the pole. I did not know what it was, but it made it stick in my brain. Due to the fact I live in Johnson B, I have to walk all the way across campus everyday. I see many different ads on buses or brands of people's shirts or shoes. I have a lot of time to think about what they meant. Many of the brands and ads are the same ones we have been seeing for years. Yet, most people see it and walk on by. With the image ingrained in their subconscious, they go out and buy said brands. Learning to dissect these ads as Rhetoric is a skill worth learning. Now that I know what rhetoric is, it is easier to see these things out.

On my way to English today, I took a different route. Out of my dorm I saw signs on everyone's doors. I saw flyers of announcements and ads on my way to the stairs. On the stairs I saw girls with logos on their shirts. I walk by the library, and everytime I see it I think of why they built it they way they did with the roof different heights. I always think of a stack of books. As I'm walking towards LaFollette, I hear a band playing our school song. Cutting through the middle of campus, I hear the band getting louder. I step onto the main drive, I don't remember what it's called, but I see a sea of red. Our band was playing while walking through campus! I wonder what it was for, and I guess that they are doing this to hype everyone up for the opening football game tomorrow. Still on my way to LaFollette, I see the buses that take kids to and from classes. I notice how the back of the buses state that they are eco-friendly. I'm almost to the building. Everytime I walk around or across campus, I think of my parents. They both went here, and my mom taught me most about this school.
This assignment made me realize there is rhetoric CONSTANTLY all around us, even when we don't notice it. I am more aware now what this concept means and how to recognize how things are rhetoric. We are exposed to rhetoric nonstop.

As I was walking to my English class today I encountered many different rhetorical things. I was walking from my dorm to the Woodworth food court. I went down 6 flights of steep stairs to get to the food court. As I walking down there I saw many people wearing Ball State T-shirts. I went to get a salad at the salad bar and was standing behind someone wearing a lime green T-shirt. Then I went to eat at the table. Then I walked out of the woodworth building and went past the University theatre and the Bracken Library. While I was walking past the Bracken Library there were people there who were handing out flyer's for sorority recruitment. I then walked past the atrium and I saw a ambulance driving down the street. I walked with many people wearing clothing from Abercrombie, Hollister, Old Navy, and American Eagle. I then walked past the bell tower and the Robert Bell math building. I then had to wait on the stop light and tell me when I could cross the street. As I was walking across the street I saw many students talking on their cell phones and eating a sandwich while walking to class. I then was at Lafollette for my English class. I walked down the stairs and waited by the classroom. I saw that many people were wearing clothing from American eagle and Kohl's. I saw many students have Ball State University written on their T-Shirt. Everyday that I am walking to classes now I have learned that rhetoric's have influenced me in everything I do and seeing labels on students T-shirts I now know that it is part of rhetoric's.

In the morning when i had finally woken up chosen my shirt for the day out of a variety of different colors and designs, i walked out my door put the key in the lock and locked my door. I then proceeded to walk down the monotonous corridor of door with different colored papers on each. Finally i had reached the whitewash stairwell walked down two flights of stairs and out into the loby where i was greeted by friends also ready to go to class. We then exited through the front doors that were covered with papers of all colors and headed toward the street. We walked along the street on the sidewalk and passed many different people all of which were wering a different combination of colors and designs on their clothing. Following this we entered through the large glass doors of the atrium and stood in the dinning area for a brief second until we saw the wooden door of our class open as people in all different apparel rushed in.
This activity of walking to class showed me rhetoric by the color of peoples shirts to the colors of papers that were trying to give us announcements. this is shown in the way that some people show emotion through color and other colors draw our attention.

It's morning, so I head off to my first class across campus. I wake up, and a poster in my room is the first sight I see. I get dressed, an my shirt has a message on it. I walk out my room and turn to lock my door, and notice that my RA has left me a new note over the night. After my door is locked, I turn to walk down the hall, and admire all of the different posters and signs that decorate our walls. I press the button on the elevator, and notice that, once again, there are more signs in the elevator. The elevator comes to a stop at our destination, and I step out. There is a poster advertising an upcoming event on campus. I open the door to head out, and I see that I am not the only one with a message on my shirt. Almost everyone I pass does as well. I try to read them all, but there seems to be far too many. I come up to the Scramble Light, and there are students passing out fliers for one of their club meetings. I take one, and glance at it, but them I hear the chirp of the Scramble Light, so I start my way across the road. As I do this, I see all the comical and political bumper stickers on various cars. I chuckle silently to myself. I finally reach my seat in the class room.
As I think back, I realize just how many rhetorical pieces of media I had been exposed to in my short walk. Everything I saw was something rhetorical.

I turned my music off that was playing from my computer, connected to my speakers. I closed my laptop. Cleaned my room up. Made my bed. Charged my iPad. Packed my laptop into my backpack, along with my English books, pencils, notebooks and black folder. I observed the room one last time. Grabbed my backpack, put it on my shoulder and put my headphones in my ear. Closed the door. Locked it. Cracked a couple jokes with our custodian. Opened the first door. Saw this pretty female working at the desk. Waved. Walked through the next set of doors. Saw a not so pretty female on the elevator. Didn't wave. Went through the next set of doors and down the stairs through the next two sets of doors. Saw people sitting, listening to music and on their computers. I waited outside and noticed there were a few attractive females in my class. Came in the classroom. Sat down, took out my computer. Checked my M.E. website. Started my day.

On my way to class, I see many rhetorical things. There are many flyers and posters and stuff like that posted all over campus and in the dorms and in the buildings, trying to get people to join their clubs or meetings or groups or whatever. I also see many people's clothing with many designer labels, such a Nike, Adidas, American Eagle, and so on. Also many people wear Ball State clothing. I do not see much rhetoric stuff because when I am walking to class I tend to not pay attention to my surroundings very much, just to where I am headed. But when I do see rhetoric stuff it is what everyone else on campus sees. We all see the same stuff because we all walk most of the same paths to get where we need to go.
Now that I know more about rhetoric, I will pay more attention to it as i walk around the campus. I will probably try to analyze it as well, because it will become habit.

I really enjoy reading. I only started to like it when I was in third grade, and my mom gave me a book series to read; Series of Unfortunate Events. And ever since then, I have any book that strikes my fancy, which happens to be many. As of right now, I tend to like realistic fiction, especially ones that have to do with a person's psychology. This is most likely because this is my major.
Writing, can be a different story. I have always liked coming up with stories, but I absolutly despise writing them down. And for papers for school, I dislike writing these the most. They are not fun or slightly entertaining to write.

I have had many writing and reading experiences over my years in school. One positive writing experience was in my freshman year in high school. The assignment was simple,
write a story. Having watch a baseball game on the television the night
before, I decided to write a story about a baseball game. I spent a good
while on it, and when I turned it in, the teacher though it was great!
I was extremely happy about it. I did however have a horrible writing experience. Actually I had 2 but one was in Spanish so I didn't count that one. I had spent all week on it and the teacher it was terrible!

The first book I picked up, titled, Green Eggs and Ham," was what introduced my eyes to reading. I learned my colors and my love for rhyming from that book. I was four and that was the first and most important positive reading experience I have had. When I was in the seventh grade, I was assigned to read and write a new book report on a weekly basis. I absolutely dreaded that assignment, making it my most negative reading assignment.
My sophomore year of high school sparked my interest in music and in my writing. I moved to Texas that year, leaving me with no one to communicate my inner most thoughts and ideas, so I began to write, which eventually began to change into my rap music lyrics being written daily. It sparked my creativity and introduced me to the bright side of writing papers and essays, making writing fun for me. Prior to that positive experience, I didn't care much for writing, mainly because I only wrote science papers and who wants to write twelve page research papers every 4 months. All in all, my experiences created me into the man I am today and I'm thankful for them!

Growing up I have always enjoyed reading. I used reading not only as a form of entertainment, but as way to educate myself. If you take this into consideration, you can safely assume that I haven't had many negative experiences while reading. However, there is always that one book that takes more motivation to read. I find it most difficult to retain the information being read. I like write and I recently started a blog just to express my thoughts. Although, I often find it difficult to get started writing with an idea.

My most negative experience with writing was with a research paper. This research paper I had to write my senior year of high school. I had to write an 8 page paper on my senior project topic, which was on glass blowing. I thought this paper was a really fantastic paper, when I was writing it. I worked so hard for so long on this paper. I was actually proud when I turned it in. The day that I checked my grade I did not find an A like I was hoping for: I found an F. The reason I got the F on the paper was because of commas. I guess I am really bad at grammar when it comes to commas. My teacher was a really strict grader so more than half of the people in my grade failed the paper. I mean yes there were a few other things wrong with it but not things that would make me fail. I blame her for not teaching me how to write up to her expectations.
My most negative experience with reading was when I started reading. When I started reading, me and my mom realized I had dyslexia. We realized this because I would start reading in the middle of the word, then I would go to the end of the word, then start at the beginning and go to the middle, and that is how I would read a word. Needless to say reading has never been a joy to me.

In class writing one.
My most negative experience with writing was with a research paper. This research paper I had to write my senior year of high school. I had to write an 8 page paper on my senior project topic, which was on glass blowing. I thought this paper was a really fantastic paper, when I was writing it. Writing and reading are basically one in the same to me. They both take effort to teach you something. However, I feel reading takes more effort. It is hard for me to stay focused, especially when I have to read something. I have a short attention span, so sometimes I have to reread things more than twice to fully understand the information I am trying to obtain. For example, my SAT score for the writing portion was not very good. Normally, I am an average writer. I get my point across and do my best to stay on topic. I did not understand the prompt that the SAT book gave us, so my writing was affected. I had a negative reading experience, which ultimately resulted in a negative writing experience as well.
In class assignments, however, come very easy to me. I have written many papers that have received high letter grades. Writing comes easy to me, where as reading, not so much. I like being able to express my thoughts through words. It makes much more sense that way. I do not always have the most perfect writing style, but I write the way I feel. It's easy for me to read what I write, but I find it difficult to often read what others have read, because everyone has different thoughts. No one's thoughts are the same when down in context.

Throughout the years I have had many encounters with reading and writing. Not all experiences have been good, but not all experiences have been bad. I am not a huge fan of reading, so finding a book that I actually like is very rare. A good reading experience that I had would be in 8th grade when I read I Am Third by Gale Sayers. Gale Sayers was one of the greatest Chicago Bears football players ever and wrote this book once he retired. The concept of the book was that he was third, meaning god and his family came before himself. It was a good experience for me reading that book because it had a really good message and was written by a someone I had heard a lot about.
I good writing experience I have had would have to be when I wrote a speech in 5th grade for the dare drug program. I had to write a paper/speech about what the class taught me and why drugs and alcohol were bad. I spent a lot of time working on my paper and ended up winning the contest for greatest speech. This writing experience was good for me because it gave me confidence in my writing ability and encouraged me to continue writing in the future.

In the past I have had some
difficulties, I have dyslexia and ADHD and this makes concentrating on reading
and writing a bit difficult. I have overcome it a bit and somewhat enjoy
writing if it is a pleasant. For instance short stories or opinion-based essays
are a bit more fun for me as opposed to lengthy essays over books and such.
On the other hand reading is still
about as fun as getting my teeth pulled if it is not a book I enjoy. It is
tedious and I am a slow reader and this doesn’t help at all either. I am eager
to finish and get bored and distracted easily.
