quoting assignment

Mikaela McMillen Friday Assignment
“Several administrators noted that when one school year runs into the next, they find themselves going through the motions without that opportunity for self-assessment and planning for the future of the educational program (Wildman).
A lot of the administrators had noticed that they had been going through the motions and not taking breaks to evaluate themselves, and they noted that their years were running together (Wildman).
A lot of the administrators had noticed that they had been going through the motions and not taking breaks to evaluate themselves, and they noted that their years were running together. One of them specifically had not used his vacation days and his wife wanted a divorce. Now their vacations are a means of survival not something that is happy go lucky and looked forward to (Wildman).

"Many people who live on the front lines say City Hall's message about progress against street violence doesn't match the reality of neighborhoods like Englewood and Auburn-Gresham, where shootings remain a daily occurrence." (Chicago Tribune)

1Paraphrase:      Policeman who work in the bad neighborhoods like Englewood and Auburn-Gresham disproves Governor Rahm Emmanuel's idea that crime is decreasing in these areas.
2Summary   The truth of Chicago's crime progression is that there is none and that the city has been creating false hopes for the newspapers and the people of Chicago.

The fattest state in America is Mississippi, a new study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found, showing that the state has nearly a 35 percent obesity rate.
Though Mississippi may have earned the dishonor of being the fattest state in America, it is far from alone in having high obesity rates, Yahoo News reported. There are 12 other states with more than 30 percent obesity rates among their population, including a top four consisting of states in the South.

Mississippi retains it's throne as the fattest state in America according the to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention coming in with an obesity rate at approximately 35 percent. Although Mississippi received the crown, it's far from the only state with obesity rates higher than 30 percent. Yahoo News said, "There are nearly 12 other states with more than 30 percent obesity rates among their population, including a top four consisting of states in the South."

Underage Drinking

"Other research shows that the younger children and adolescents are when they start to drink, the more likely they will be to engage in behaviors that harm themselves and others. For example, frequent binge drinkers (nearly 1 million high school students nationwide) are more likely to engage in risky behaviors, including using other drugs such as marijuana and cocaine, having sex with six or more partners, and earning grades that are mostly D's and F's in school." Sentence: Binge drinkers are said to partake in other bad habits such as illegal drugs and premarital sex and if they are in school they usually have low grades. Paragraph: Research provides information on young people when they drink and shows that they will more than likely do other things that can cause harm to themselves and peers. Binge drinkers are said to partake in other bad habits, such as illegal drugs and premarital sex and if they are in school they usually have very poor grades in their classes.
"Keyonna Morrow, a student at Swoape's former Muncie school, told the Indianapolis Star that Tori’s friends were not aware of the extent of the bullying either."

A student who went to Swoape's school named Keyonna Morrow spoke to an Indianapolis news paper at Tori, she said that her friends didn't know just how bad she was getting bullied.

A 15-year-old girl named Tori Swoape from Bloomington, Indiana committed suicide on Monday night. She hung herself in her bedroom using a scarf. Her mother took her to the hospital where they were unable to save her and she was pronounced dead. She committed suicide due to being bullied and teased at her school, Bloomington High School North. Her classmates would call her names and spread many rumors about her. Before she died she had a Facebook post saying how people need to leave her alone and stop bullying her. Her mother told Fox 59 that she knew about Tori being bullied but she had
asked her to stay out of it and told her that she was ok. Her mother never thought her daughter would commit suicide.

International trafficking cases fell 13 per cent to 3,531 in 2011, down from 4,066 in 2008. But domestic cases shot up 140 per cent from 713 in 2008 to 1,708 last year. The fall in international cases may reflect more efficient immigration and border controls, while the increase in the number of domestic cases may reflect greater public awareness of trafficking and improved domestic law enforcement, according to IOM Head of Counter Trafficking Laurence Hart.

1Paraphrase:      There has been a decrease in international cases of human trafficking.
2Summary:    Factors such as better border control and immigration policy have led to a decrease in cases of human trafficking.

Direct Quote: Poverty has been called this election season's invisible issue, but Wednesday's policy speech from Republican vice-presidential candidate Paul Ryan finally brought it into the spotlight.
In his address, given at Ohio’s Cleveland State University, the Wisconsin congressman said that "in this war on poverty, poverty is winning," and talked about public education, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly food stamps), and other issues facing the 46 million Americans living below the poverty line.

"It's no surprise today that the majority of American goods are made overseas. And it's usually not considered a good thing. Outsourcing, labor disputes and abuse, defective and dangerous chemicals — there's a lot to be worried about."

My direct quote shows the dangers of outsourcing labor.  America's companies are currently disregarding all of these dangers and problems to increase productivity and save money.  Although these are some of the biggest worries of outsourcing labor, these are only the tip of the iceberg.  Outsourcing labor is a very dangerous and complicating process that has an effect on many peoples lives around the world today.

Alcohol outlets related to crimes.

Kathryn Stewart, "How Alcohol Outlets Affect Neighborhood Violence," Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation

In a six-year study of changes in numbers of alcohol outlets in 551 urban and rural zip code areas  in California, an increase in the number of bars and off-premise places convenience was related to an increase in the rate of violence.

Areas with a high density of alcohol selling locating are suffering frequently more crimes than areas with a low density of alcohol selling locations.

Sample Review of literature

According to Mark Meewell‘s article “Should Prescription Drugs Be Advertised?” in Health magazine, there is a conflict of interest involved.  He states that the pharmacy companies come across as if they are trying to solve problems and help people improve their health.  But actually they want the increased business and profits that result from more prescriptions.  They sound medical, and people trust doctors.  But they are companies that have long histories of shady tactics and questionable ethics, especially when it comes to preventing cheaper, generic drugs to be marketed and driving up the price of drugs such that the profit margin is 400 percent in some cases. This article is a good explanation of the issue and a good source of statistics.
Another article says the value of researching this topic is imperative because in the long run we could have a larger percentage of the public addicted to prescription drugs.  Psychiatrist I. M. Hooked says in his article “The Legal Drug Peddlers” in The Journal of Psychology  that the danger for addiction may not start with the kid pushing drugs in the schoolyard as much as it does with television commercials implying that no matter what ails you, there’s a prescription drug you can take for it.  He also states that the side effects may be worse than the problem the drug is supposed to fix, but that the commercials run through that information quickly and in a lower tone of voice so as not to draw attention to the possible problems, some of which can be fatal.  This article takes a psychology perspective in looking at the way the companies convince the public to literally buy into their claims.
Dr. Maya Paine on the Doctor’s Forum website states that from a doctor’s perspective the prescription drug commercials are more than a nuisance.  Pharmacy companies encourage people to “ask their doctors if Zocor is right for them,” putting more and more doctors in the position of having to justify why they want another treatment for their patient or defend their choice not to prescribe the drug.  Doctors are pressed for free samples by their patients who have been taken in by the promises and the visual appeal of the ads.  Also, the ads directly addressing the public seem to sidestep the doctor, almost second-guessing how they treat their patients.  So it makes the doctors look like they aren’t doing their job.
