Title: Inside Scoop on Puppy Mills

Hook: Puppy mills are places where a group of people use female dogs to reproduce continuously until they can no longer reproduce. Some people say that a person running a puppy mill is the same as a person who is breeding a dog.

Thesis: Puppy mills are behind the scenes kind of businesses and are continuing to grow in the United States. The conditions of the facilities are horrendous and are putting a toll on the dogs’ bodies and mind. There are too many people in the United States that are unaware of where they are actually purchasing their dogs from, and how it is affecting the United States as a whole.

Sub-Head 1: Female dogs are suffering from over reproduction, due to the continuous cycle of producing puppies.

·         Topic Sentence:  Puppy mills are large scale commercial businesses that produce puppies at a rapid rate and sell to pet stores and online shoppers.

Sub-Head 2: Overall, puppies are suffering from disease and behavioral problems.

·         Topic Sentence: The diseases that the puppies are suffering from are being carried over to pet stores and to potential buyer’s homes; the conditions of the puppy mills are creating behavioral problems which carry over to when they are adults and will be with them unless corrected at a young age.

Sub-Head 3: Every state has laws that prohibit animal abuse, but some states don’t carry out their laws as heavily as they should.

·         Topic Sentence: Animals are being abused each day, and not every case is taken to court. In 2010, there were a little over one thousand reports on animal abuse in the United States, but sadly, there are even more that go unspoken of.

Sub-Head 4: Puppy mill awareness is very low in the United States and it need to be taken more seriously.

·         Topic Sentence: After conducting survey with students at Ball State University, I have found that not too many people even know what a puppy mill is let alone what effect it has on dogs.
