"Approximately 5 million to 7 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year, and approximately 3 million to 4 million are euthanized (60 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats). Shelter intakes are about evenly divided between those animals relinquished by owners and those picked up by animal control. These are national estimates; the percentage of euthanasia may vary from state to state" (ASPCA).
Each year animal shelters have to euthanize millions of animals due to a higher intake of animals than space in the facility. Between dogs and cats, cats have a higher percentage of death rates than dogs, but as a whole, just about half of the animals taken into the shelter are euthanized (ASPCA).
When looking at the national estimate of euthanasia being used in the United States, millions of dogs and cats are being euthensied due to lack of space in animal shelters. Animal owner s are dropping them off and animal control is picking them off the street, and too many are in the facility. Cats have a higher rate of death than dogs, but it varies between the states (ASPCA).
